What are the odds of your dreams of a White Christmas coming True?

Statistically, we can expect to see a white Christmas at least once every two years, because at least one snowflake has fallen on Christmas Day 38 times in the last 55 years. The Met Office says that if even a single snowflake falls during the 24 hour period of Christmas Day it can be termed a white Christmas.

But a white Christmas that is seen on Christmas cards with snow covering the ground is a lot rarer.

The last real white Christmas was in 2010 when 83% of stations reported snow lying on the ground on Christmas Day.

The Met Office can only accurately forecast if snow is likely on Christmas Day five days before. But they say we can expect more than half of all Christmas Days to be a White Christmas. We are more likely to see snow in January and March than in December.

After 40-50cm of snow fell in the Highlands a few weeks ago. William Hill bookmakers started offering odds on snowfall in a number of cities. But betting odds have changed now suggesting that a White Christmas is a long shot. The computer from the weather outlook at the minute is saying that it is expected to be too mild to snow in nearly all places in the United Kingdom, although it will be cold in Scotland on Christmas Day.
