Play premieres at Grimsby Minster on Saturday

‘Hilda & the Northern Powerhouse’ will premiere at Grimsby Minster on Saturday 21 September at 6pm.

This new production explore contemporary debates through the story of St Hilda of Whitby.  Hilda lived from 614-680.  She was a Saxon Abbess who founded a double monastery of both monks and nuns at Whitby.  She also and hosted the first ‘referendum’ on Europe at the Synod of 664.

Hilda’s story resonates with questions of power and influence in contemporary Britain, particularly in the light of Brexit.  Saturday’s premiere will be an immersive experience, presenting an imaginative re-telling of this compelling piece of history which is rooted in the land local to the Humber.

Writer Kate Hainsworth says

It is time to revisit the story of this charismatic Saxon woman.  Her influence has so much contemporary resonance.  It is a chance to celebrate a local heroine, and involve our communities in her legacy.  We’re thrilled to be working with a trinity of talented female performers.

The performers referred to are Oyin Orjia, Sarah Naughton, and Alice Palmer.  Oyin Orija who stars as Patience, a charismatic priest who moved north from London to become vicar of Goodenham from London, commented,

As soon as I heard about this production, I knew immediately that I wanted to be part of it.  I love what this play stands for, which ultimately conveys the strength, power and influence women possess.

Sarah Naughton plays Hilda, and Alice Palmer plays Lucy, who has always lived local to Hull and is the curate at Goodenham.

Kate Hainsworth who wrote the play, and is looking to develop it further, is an experienced writer and creative producer based in East Yorkshire.  She has a particular interest in art that springs from and reflects local geographic and cultural interests.  She particularly seeks to give voice to the voiceless and disenfranchised.

Tickets for Saturday’s premiere are available from the Hilda Powerhouse Facebook page, by email, and from Grimsby Minster café.

Mary Vickers moved to North East Lincolnshire in 2010, from the Wiltshire/Hampshire border, to become Urban and Industrial Chaplain NELincs. Made redundant in 2017, she's maintained many of her connections within the business, faith, and other local communities. She's also decided to stay here rather than return to either the south or her husband's native Yorkshire, so that she can continue to enjoy and help promote the positives of NELincs.
