SEASON three of MAN v FAT Football kicks off next month in Grimsby – the weight-loss scheme which helps men get back into exercising through playing football.
The FA-endorsed league is for the 68 per cent of UK men who are overweight or obese. It combines football with easy to follow diet and lifestyle advice as well as 24/7 online and offline support.
The first two seasons, held at Lincs Inspire’s Bradley Football Development Centre, drew in around 120 players who collectively lost a total of 665kg (105 stone), equivalent to the weight of 13,000 Mars bars!
Gary Precious, operations manager at Lincs Inspire’s Bradley Football Development Centre, said: “The 14-week league sees players come together to enjoy a game of football but only after they’ve weighed-in to determine how much weight they have lost that week. It’s the unique aspect of the scheme and means that the final results are decided not just on the score on the pitch, but as a result of goal bonuses that teams earn from their weight loss. It works incredibly well because each player doesn’t want to let their team mates down. The games can be competitive, but the weight loss aspect also plays a vital part; it makes for a winning combination and we’re looking forward to the success of a third season.”
Season two came to an end in May and cup winners, The Real Madras, collectively lost 46.4 kgs. Will Whale, a player from team Borussia Monchenbackfat, topped the individual leader board for the second season running for the most amount of weight lost.
Will weighed 202.4kg (31 stone 12 lb) when he signed up for the programme in September 2018. He now weighs 156.7kg (24 stone 6Ib) crediting Man V Fat Football for kick-starting his dramatic 7 stone weight loss success.
Will said: “I’ve really enjoyed Man V Fat. I lost 4 stone in total after completing the first two seasons, with more weight lost since then with my new healthier lifestyle through exercising and eating better foods. It’s been brilliant for me. It works so well because you don’t want to let anyone down. You aren’t on your own, it’s a real team effort. You want to win every week and so you set yourself weight loss goals. It’s not just about the goals scored on the pitch, although that helps, but not letting your team mates down is the driving passion behind losing weight.”
Season three starts on Friday, September 13, at 6pm at Bradley Football Development Centre, Grimsby. The weigh-ins are followed by a 30 minute game of six-a-side football.
MAN v FAT Football costs £25 per month and interested players can register at www.manvfatfootball.org/grimsby.
Anyone completing four weeks of the scheme will also qualify for a month’s free Lincs Inspire gym membership.
