Stress in middle-aged women could trigger memory loss when older.

Middle-aged women who go through stressful experiences such as divorce, job losses, bereavement, and children leaving home which can all cause enough anxiety to trigger issues.

The research found that those women who were badly affected by midlife stress were worst at remembering a list of words decades later. But it was not the case for men, researchers suggest stress hormones may have a stronger effect on women’s brains.

Researchers found that the risk of dementia more than doubled in middle-aged women who had suffered decades of stress from work, health family or other problems.

Dr. Munro said that although we can’t get rid of stressors, we might adjust the way we respond to stress, and have a real effect on brain function as we age.
