RANGERS SEE OFF RIVALS IN EMIRATES FA CUP

Winterton Rangers battle past local rivals Grimsby Borough with a 2-1 home win to advance to the Preliminary Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Rangers got off to the perfect start as Josh Nichol opened the scoring after just 3 minutes to shock the visitors. As the game continued the local derby rivalry was beginning to show as things heated up on the pitch, a second goal for Rangers after 32 minutes from Adam Baskerville put us in the driving seat but an almost immediate reply handed our visitors a life line shortly before the half time break.

The match once again had another twist with the visitors being reduced to 10 men as Jack Debnam received a straight red card for a clumsy challenge with only a few minutes remaining in the first half.

With the visitors rattled and always looking strong on the break it was up to the Rangers midfield and defence to battle on and keep our lead intact. Frustrations once again boiled over with a few needless challenges as the referee certainly had a busy afternoon.

With around 10 minutes left and Rangers defence holding strong the visitors just couldn’t break us down to find the all important equaliser, frustrations once again boiled over with Grimsby being reduced to 9 men as Daniel Trott received a straight red card for a punch on Liam Nelthorpe and fighting, not only with Rangers players but his own too.

As matters began to calm a little, Rangers just had to keep hold of the ball and see out the final few minutes to the delight of the home crowd, players and management.

FA Cup Draw: Rangers are once again at home in the Preliminary Qualifying Round as Kirby Muxloe from Leicestershire will visit the Hammond Homes Stadium on Saturday 24th August.
