Thug who inflicted terrible injuries on a pensioner is jailed for 10 years.

Elliot Challis 21 had downed 48 beers in two days when he attacked a pensioner as he was walking home.

He attacked defenceless John Close 88 with a chair leg a shopping trolley and coffee table in August last year. Challis attacked Mr Close as he was walking through Tivoli Gardens pushing him in his back and demanding his wallet. He then attacked Mr Close with a chair leg and then hurled a shopping trolley and a coffee table at him which hit his head.

Mr Close had a fractured cheekbone, bleeding on the skull and was very severely bruised. He spent three days in hospital.

Challis also attacked a disabled pensioner on the same day it is believed he was a wheelchair user who only had the use of one leg and one eye. The man has no memory of the assault in which he was left with severe head injuries.

In a third attack he had an accomplice Christopher Tuplin 36 they robbed a man of £215 and 40 cigarettes.  Challis had 13 previous convictions for offences which included burglary and theft. He was jailed for four years for the attempted robbery of Mr Close. For the robbery of the disabled man he was jailed for five years, and for the third incident he was given nine months. All the sentences will run consecutively, and also an extra nine months for breaching a suspended sentence which he received in November 2017 for handling a stolen car following a burglary.
