A trio of preserve Grimsby Cleethorpes Transport buses are joining in the celebration of our local heritage in September this year.
Heritage open days are your once-a-year chance to discover some of North East Lincolnshire’s rarely seen historic treasures, with exciting experiences that bring local history and culture to life, for free as part of an international event!
This year, exciting venues being opened to the public include the Empire Theatre in Cleethorpes and areas of the Kasbah rarely seen. Other attractions, like Cleethorpes Town Hall, the Time Trap in Grimsby Town Hall and Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre will be open for free too.
A trio of preserved Grimsby Cleethorpes Transport (GCT) buses will provide a free shuttle service between the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre and the Kasbah on Grimsby Docks on 14 September, as part of the ‘Back to the Kasbah’s Future’ event. The three vehicles spent their operational lives working in and around Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Immingham by the towns’ municipal undertaking, which was formed in 1957 and sold to Stagecoach in 1993. At the Kasbah event the three vehicles will be reunited in Grimsby for the first time in at least 35 years.
Heritage Open Days celebrates England’s architecture and culture by allowing visitors free access to interesting properties that are not usually publicly accessible or would normally charge a fee. It also includes tours, events and activities that focus on and celebrate the local heritage of the area. Heritage Open Days is England’s biggest and most popular voluntary cultural event and is also held in a further 48 countries across Europe.
Ever since 1994 Heritage Lincolnshire has co-ordinated Heritage Open Days within the historic county. So far there have been well over a thousand events and hundreds of thousands of visitors. But we couldn’t do it without our volunteers, as hundreds of people each year give their time to plan events and open up special places that matter to them.
Some tours need to be pre-booked as there’s limited space. To find out more, and book your place, visit http://www.discovernel.co.uk/heritage-open-days.
