Four new solar compacting bins installed by North East Lincolnshire Council

This year across the UK, councils have been piloting the bins which are designed to compress rubbish meaning they do not need to be emptied as often as standard bins.

The solar bins can hold up to ten times more rubbish than a normal, non-compacting bin.

In North East Lincolnshire, bins have been placed at busy litter and recycling hotspots where street bins fill up quickly. These have been placed at Weelsby Woods, People’s Park, Cleethorpes Country Park and Duke of York Gardens.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment, said: “Most people hate to see litter in the streets, parks and on the beach, there’s no excuse for it. If you can’t find a bin, then please be responsible and take your rubbish home.

“Software installed in the new solar bins collects data and generates wireless alerts when they are full and need to be emptied.

“This saves on time, reduces traffic and related emissions and ultimately cuts the cost of collection.”

It comes as larger litter bins have been installed across North East Lincolnshire, which hold more litter than the older models, reducing the risk of overflowing.
