Eight-year-old speed cops give speeding drivers a ticking off.

Under a volunteer scheme, police are using children in order to shame drivers who are pulled up for speeding outside their schools. The children stand next to police officers outside their school gates armed with a speed gun. The children have a day or two out of lessons and go out on patrol with a regular officer.

Drivers are then given an option of accepting three points on their licence or facing a telling off from children as young as eight. They are then asked questions such as Why do you think the speed limit is 20mph on this road? and are you aware of the consequences of speeding.? Most of the motorists that are stopped choose to have a conversation with the children.

The mini police initiative is run in conjunction with local authorities and police say it is more likely to put motorists of speeding in the future. Drivers who are caught driving at excessive speed are not given the option and will still face traditional penalties.

Hopefully when they have the consequences of their dangerous driving explained will hopefully make drivers aware of the danger of excessive speed. Speeding around schools presents a danger to our children who are among the most vulnerable road users.
