You could soon receive points on your licence for not wearing a seat belt.

Tough new rules are proposed to cut road deaths. The proposals could see motorist not wearing a seat belt given penalty points on their licence.  The proposals also include an in-car breathalyser for people who are known to drink and drive which will stop the vehicle from starting if they are over the limit. Also considered is banning young drivers from the roads at night and not allowing them passengers under a certain age.

More than a quarter of car deaths involved people not wearing a seatbelt in 2017. There could be a public consultation later in the year. But any plans would not come into effect until 2020.
