Who do you think should be responsible for dementia care costs?

The broken care system continues to affect families living with dementia. There are some truly heartbreaking stories it has been revealed that families have spent £15 billion pounds over the past two years supporting relatives with the illness. Many of the sufferers will have to sell their homes to pay for care.

Anyone who has more than £23,250 in assets including the value of their home has to pay the full value of their care. Which can often reach £100,000 in a year? Then after they have sold up and gone into a home they end up subsidising those whose support is state-funded.

One person said that his 87-year-old mother made one big mistake in her life which was to listen to the advice of the state. And save for her old age she didn’t drink or smoke and was frugal all her life.

But she now has dementia and is paying £1,000 a week in care costs. It has caused her so much mental stress it’s scandalous.

Another said that his father died when he was a child and his mother had to work seven days a week to keep a roof over the family. Eventually, she saved for a home but never had anything else.

She now has dementia and her beloved house has had to be sold to pay for her care.

Are you worried about paying care fees?

Do you think there should be an insurance scheme we could pay to fund our care if we need it in the future?
