Grimsby Corinthians Summer Walking Football Tournament

On Wednesday 17th July over 110 walking footballers aged over 50 descended on to the fantastic 3G facility at the Bradley Football Centre.

Teams travelled from Manchester, Sheffield, Scarborough, Hornsea, Stamford, Boston, Long Bennington, Gainsborough, Grimsby and Hull to take part and attempt to win the Inter Terminals Champions Trophy at the over 60s category and the Tony Fenton and Sons Champions Trophy at the over 50s category.

The games took place over several hours in very humid conditions but were enjoyed by the players and those watching on and supporting the teams.

The standard of play is quite amazing, and the game of Walking Football continues to grow in popularity as players realise the benefits of improved fitness, improved mental well being and the fantastic camaraderie the game brings.

Some 39 matches took place which saw some incredible performances. England Internationals were playing in several of the teams, but no players looked out of place today. Several players were over the age of 70 and all contributed fully to the day’s events. They are an inspiration to us all with their fantastic enthusiasm and sporting nature.

At the other end of the scale we also introduced 16-year-old referee Kyle Tasker to the world of walking football and the young referee made quite an impression on the players from all teams.

The competition winners were Boston United in the over 50s, Grimsby Corinthians Whites in the over 60s and Stamford Strollers took the over 60s Plate competition, but the real winner was walking football.

A truly fantastic day summed up by Boston United captain Steve Slater, “Great day Mick you and your club (Grimsby Corinthians) should be proud of what you have done today a great day all round great football, great organisation great food. Thanks for another day of walking football of the highest order played in the right spirit by all teams. See you next year”
