As part of Lincolnshire International Chamber Music Festival 2019, chamber orchestra Britten Sinfonia and tenor Mark Padmore continue their Serenading Lincs project on 20 July at Grimsby Minster, where they will join forces on stage with local voices from The Grimsby Minster Choir and pupils from David Ross Education Trust academy schools across Lincolnshire in the DRET Youth Choir. They will be joined by professional soprano Nina Bennet, who was born and brought up in Scunthorpe, where she began her career singing in the Scunthorpe Co-operative Choir.

48 pupils aged 11-18 from secondary schools in Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire will take part in the performance of Britten’s The Company of Heaven, and poetry readings will be given by students at Humberston Academy in Grimsby.
The concert, which will be conducted by DRET Youth Choir Director, Simon Toyne, will feature a quintessentially English programme, with music by Finzi, Vaughan Williams and the orchestra’s namesake, Benjamin Britten. Britten’s The Company of Heaven was originally written as incidental music for a BBC Radio programme in 1937 and punctuated with readings of texts by the likes of John Milton, Christina Rossetti, Emily Brontë and William Blake. It was not given its first concert performance until the 1989 Aldeburgh Festival, but is nevertheless a stirring and contemplative expression of faith and love.
In November and December 2018, Britten Sinfonia and Mark Padmore commenced Serenading Lincs, bringing world-class classical concerts and education projects into the heart of the community, and into the towns and villages of Lincolnshire. They gave concerts in Nettleton Village Hall, Crowland Abbey, Alford Corn Exchange and Lincoln’s Blue Room, worked with students at the University of Lincoln and engaged with pupils in schools across the county.
