Labour MP Melanie Onn challenges government on devastating and unfair changes of Universal Credit to Grimsby constituents

Labour MP Melanie Onn challenges government on devastating and unfair changes of Universal Credit to Grimsby constituents.

The MP has written to the Minister of State for Employment to highlight the plight of several Grimsby residents impacted by ill-thought out changes to benefits.

Constituent Mr Knox had an old court fine changed from £5 per week to a 40% deduction in benefits when he was moved to Universal Credit. Fines of up to 40% on such basic benefit payments push people into poverty and cause financial hardships.

The Grimsby MP’s letter argues that the inflexibility and flawed assumptions of the DWP are driving more and more people to rely on foodbanks. A working family in Grimsby on zero-hour contracts had to turn to the Rock Foundation foodbank in Grimsby because of the cuts to their payments under universal credit.
