Cleethorpes Cricket Club entertain Wakefield Thornes at Chichester Road on Saturday

Cleethorpes Cricket Club continue their run of games against the top teams in the 4 Probate & Wills ECB Yorkshire South Premier League.

At Chichester Road on Saturday they entertain Wakefield Thornes who have won the league every season since its inauguration in 2016.

The West Yorkshire side are presently second in the league table, trailing Doncaster Town by 12 points. That is the exact number of points that will be available to the winners of Saturday’s game at Cleethorpes, and the champions elect will be hoping to secure these and continue their pursuit of a 4th consecutive title.

Wakefield have never lost to Cleethorpes, although they came very near to being beaten in 2017. Batting first, at Chichester Road, they amassed a total of 289-5 which looked a formidable score. A spirited reply from Cleethorpes, however, had Wakefield worried before they scraped home by a mere 11 runs as the Meggies innings closed on 278-5.

Left handed batsman David Toft has often proved a thorn in the side of Cleethorpes and has twice scored a century against them. This term apart from Toft the Meggies will have to be wary of Richard Foster who has re-joined the club from Hanging Heaton.

While with his previous club, opening batsman Foster ensured his name was written into club history by sharing in a Central Yorkshire League record opening partnership of 320 against Townville.

Slow left arm spinner Satyajeet Bachhav is also a newcomer for Wakefield. He is the leading all time wicket-taker in Indian Under 19 cricket, and could prove a handful for the Cleethorpes batting line-up.

Cleethorpes revert to the selected team from last Saturday’s abandoned game at Elsecar. Teenager Harry Costello, who had to stand down due to illness, has now recovered, and reclaims his place in the side.

With this week’s game being followed by a trip to league leaders Doncaster Town the Cleethorpes side will be keen to halt the progress of their visitors, and enhance their own chances of moving nearer to the league summit.
