By JOIN Lincs Inspire Library Services between June 18 and June 29 at Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre for an exhibition that will tell the story of World War One Civilian Internment Camp Ruhleben.
The exhibition is part of a wider programme of events called ‘In Ruhleben Camp’ taking place during the summer. Through a series of talks, workshops, a theatre production and now an exhibition, it is hoped that the story of many local men who were in German territory and imprisoned at the Camp shortly after the outbreak of war will be told and preserved for future generations.
Derek O’Connell, Library Services Development Manager, Lincs Inspire said: “With the help of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, this project has already generated great interest from the local community. We have been able to add to our collection of artefacts from the Camp, whilst ensuring that the stories of the local men who were interned there are passed on. Our exhibition will provide a window of opportunity for the public to browse reproductions of photos, postcards, documents and a host of resources from Ruhleben Camp.”
The exhibition coincides with ‘Keep the Home Fires Burning’, a one day exhibition held at Grimsby Town Hall on June 21, which will focus on the impact of the internment of these men on the local community and their families serving on the home front.
Adrian Wilkinson, Archivist, Lincs Inspire said: “June 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, which officially brought the Great War to a close. To mark the centenary the public will have a chance to see many fascinating and unique items connected with the story of the war on the Home Front.”
