Good news for those who love coffee.

Coffee lovers have been warned to cut down on coffee in previous studies with suggestions it could stiffen arteries. But now a new study on over 8,000 people in the UK found that drinking up to an average of five cups a day was no worse for their arteries than drinking less than a cup a day.

Participants of 8,412 people were divided into three groups for the study by experts from Queen Mary University London. In the first group they drank less than one cup of coffee a day, the second group drank between one and three cups a day, and the third drank more than three a day. In the last group some people drank up to 25 cups a day but five was the average.

Participants had heart scans and infrared pulse wave tests. After factors as age, weight and smoking status were taken into account researchers found the results held true.

According to researchers even those people who drank higher amounts of coffee were no more likely to have stiffening of the arteries than those who drank less than one cup a day.

Researchers said although they can not prove a casual link in this study research indicates coffee is not as bad for the arteries as previous studies had suggested.

The study was partly funded by the British Heart Foundation.
