New Cycle Hub gearing up for first summer season

Cleethorpes Cycle Hub is open to the public and ready ahead of the busy tourist season in Cleethorpes.

Located in the former ticket office at Cleethorpes Rail Station, the Cleethorpes Cycle Hub is operated by Cycle Hub Lincs, the Community Interest Company behind the successful Grimsby Cycle Hub at Grimsby Town Station.

Earlier this year saw the completion of a 15-month restoration project of the former Victorian ticket office at the station, managed by TransPennine Express, which included works to provide a glimpse back in time to how the ticket office would have once looked like whilst at the same time providing a modern workshop, office, kitchen and display area.

As part of the project works included:

  • Replacement of the guttering and downpipes with a painted cast-iron finish to match the original Victorian building
  • Original elements of the doors, windows and panelling have all been refurbished and retained
  • A new slate roof and lantern light windows
  • Thermodynamic panels installed to the rear of the building to supply underfloor heating and electricity for the building.

Cleethorpes Cycle Hub offers cycle hire including tandems, child seats, tagalongs and two seater buggies. The hub also offers secure cycle storage, cycle repairs and information about cycling activities in and around North East Lincolnshire.

Another element of the project involved the creation of an access ramp on the North Promenade allowing prams, cycles and wheelchairs easier access to the promenade from the Railway station.

Cllr John Fenty, portfolio holder for regeneration at North East Lincolnshire Council, said:

We’re investing a lot of money into the resort which will see huge changes. The new hub is gearing up for the half term and summer season. This hub will promote healthy ways to travel around and take in some of the great views in our borough. It also expands what is on offer for tourists visiting our area, tapping into the active tourism market.

Janine Walker, Managing Director at Cycle Hub Lincs, said:

We hope that the new Hub in Cleethorpes will encourage more residents to explore the resort by bike. Visitors arriving at the station by train or at the nearby Grant Street car park will be able to pop into the Hub and pick up a bike for the duration of their stay and explore the coast and countryside around North East Lincolnshire on two wheels.

The creation of a cycle hub in Cleethorpes was a project led by North East Lincolnshire Council working in partnership with ENGIE and Network Rail. The project has been funded by the National Station Improvement Programme, Department for Transport’s Sustainable Travel Access fund, NELC’s Capital Programme, Coastal Revival funding, a Railway Heritage Trust grant and Big Local North Cleethorpes.
