Mum’s warning to keep children’s car seats rear-facing as long as possible.
A teacher has posted on social media that she had picked her 18-month-old son up from the childminder. When a pick-up truck hit her car from behind and crushed the boot of her Vauxhall Astra.
The paramedic and traffic officer who attended the accident both said that it would have been a very different outcome if her little boy had been in a front facing car seat.
Her little boy could have suffered severe spinal injuries or even internal decapitation which is where the spinal cord is severed from the force of the impact.
She warned other parents to keep their children in rear-facing car seats until they reach 25kg, or 55lb up to around 6 years old.
They were only a mile from home when the accident happened. Her son was seen by paramedics and was ok. apart from bruising and a small cut on his eye. She had X-rays on her spine and shoulder but luckily it showed no fractures.
It is believed that a man was arrested at the scene near Stockport and has been charged with one count of aggravated vehicle taking. Also driving without insurance.
Her post has been shared thousands of times.
