Following weeks of fundraising effort, on Monday, Grimsby Leisure Centre’s Disability Swimming Group completed their ‘One Mile Swimming Challenge’ and in the process raised over £2000 for new equipment!
The challenge involved a team effort to swim one mile, whilst Swim Teacher Jessica Briggs recorded the distance achieved by each group member. After distances were totalled together, not only did the group reach their one mile target, but by far exceeded it!
Funds raised by the group will go towards purchasing a new water wheel chair that will allow group members to access the pool with greater ease.
Jessica Briggs, Swim Teacher, Lincs Inspire said:
The good thing about this challenge is that it is a team effort to reach the one mile target. Everyone has contributed to the final distance achieved and the money they have raised will go back into supporting the group!
The Disability Swimming Group swim every Monday between 9:30am and 11am at Grimsby Leisure Centre with the emphasis being on improving health and wellbeing. The group is inclusive of all levels of ability and mobility, and with the aid of qualified staff and specialised equipment is able to support everyone to get active and stay active.
Jade Last, Support Worker from care provider Creative Support said:
With many of the swimmers being from different care providers, the group not only provides the chance to exercise but also to meet new friends. Damon has been attending for just over a year and has gone from not being able to swim to now becoming one of the stronger swimmers in the group.
The session also demonstrates partnership working, with Lincs Inspire Swim Teachers and Sports Development staff working closely with Physiotherapists from Care Plus Group to offer a service tailored to the needs of each person.
