By Labour MP Melanie Onn urges new council leader Philip Jackson to keep Freeman Street CLS open
The Community Learning and Skills Hub, which supports learners from all backgrounds, faces closure at end of academic year.
Labour’s Grimsby MP Melanie Onn has joined parents and learners in the calls to keep Freeman Street CLS open after meeting residents and staff at the centre on Tuesday.
The Labour MP has written to new council leader Phillip Jackson to ask for support for the hub which provides tailored support to approximately 1000 learners every year.
From referrals from the Job Centre, 14-16 year old pupils with learning or behavioural difficulties, those for whom English is a second language to adults with learning disabilities, the hub provides learning to clients of various schools and organisations across the borough which otherwise would have to find an alternative provider.
However, a poor leadership and governance review from OFSTED has played a part in a decision to close the hub, despite the current Head of Service having only been in post for about six months and the effectiveness of their reforms just beginning to be reflected in monitoring.
In her letter to Mr Jackson, the Grimsby MP asks for time for the hub to make any necessary improvements and for what alternative provision has been agreed with families if the hub is to close.
