Police can now detect motorists using a mobile phone.

Police have unveiled a device which can tell when a motorists is using their mobile phone while driving.

The new device created by Westcotec can tell how many cars on a stretch of road are using phones without having a hands free kit.

The device will flash a mobile phone symbol at the vehicle to advise the user to stop using their phone, when it detects a phone being used.

But the detectors can not tell if its is the driver or passengers who is using the phone.

Hampshire and Thames Valley Police forces will be the first to use the device, which will also allow officers to be able to identify hotspots where mobile phones are used by motorists frequently.

Research has shown that you are four times more likely to crash if you are using a mobile phone while driving.

Kate Goldsmith is supporting the campaign after her daughter and her two stepbrothers and the brothers mother were killed. After lorry driver Tomasz Kroger crashed into the family’s stationary car at 50mph while scrolling through music on his mobile phone. He was jailed for 10 years after killing the mother and three children.
