By New fees for stray dog owners
North East Lincolnshire Council is changing its fee for collecting and returning stray dogs to their owners if they go missing.
From Monday 1 April, it will cost £74 to collect a stray dog that has been picked up by the council.
Dogs that the council collects are taken to holding kennels to allow initial identity checks to be undertaken.
Owners identified during this time will be contacted as quickly as possible and asked to collect their pet.
After an initial period (usually 24 hours), the dog will be transferred into the care of our partners Sangreat Kennels near Brigg.
A kennelling charge for when the owner fails to pick up their dog is also in place. This is £15.06 for each day kennelled (up to seven days) and if your dog requires veterinary treatment, there will be an additional charge. After seven days, if the dog has not been collected, the dog will be rehomed.
If people cannot collect their dog from Sangreat Kennels, the council can offer to return a dog back to its owner for a charge of £59.04.
What do I do if I find a stray dog?
If you have seen a dog but it is not contained or secured, then we are unable to deal with this. If you have concerns about the dog’s welfare, contact the RSPCA on 0300 1234999.
If you have found a dog and have contained or secured it, ring (01472) 326300 to speak to one of our dog wardens.
You can also check to see if the dog is wearing any form of identification that will enable you to return it directly to its owner.
Top tips on keeping your dog secure:
- Make sure your pet has an up-to-date microchip with the correct details so that they can be reunited with you much quicker if they get lost.
- Keep all doors and gates locked and secure so your dog cannot escape from your house or garden – or even worse, get taken.
- Whenever possible, keep your dog on a good lead when out and about.
- Have a good collar with a dog tag that fits well. It keeps your dog from slipping out of it and getting loose and it provides an easy way to ID your dog and makes your contact information available so you can get them back.
- Please note, if your dog strays while under the care of another due to holidays, please make them aware they will need to cover the costs otherwise the dog will be rehomed.
