Match report: Clee Town secure home victory over Ossett United
Cleethorpes Town secured a home victory over Ossett United in the league on Saturday afternoon.
Goals from Jack McMenemy and Alex Flett were enough to hand the Owls a 2-0 win at the Myenergi Stadium – marking the first three points for interim management duo Tim Lowe and Liam Dickens.
They made five changes to the starting lineup, with James McKeown, Tom Jamieson, Jon Oglesby, Morgan Worsfold-Gregg and Harvey Tomlinson all returning to the side.
It was a competitive opening to the game, as McMenemy drew a smart save from Paul Cooper after some excellent work from Grimsby Town loanee Tomlinson.
At the other end, the Owls had a lucky escape when a James Walshaw header cannoned away to safety after coming back off the bar.
Edwin Essel, who is also on loan from the Mariners, showed a great attitude just beyond the half-hour mark to race back to win the ball and then launch an attack for his side.
With no more than half-chances for the rest of the half, the game remained level at the break, with it all still to play for in the second half.
Janni Lipka missed a gilt-edged opportunity in the 50th minute for the Sheepicorns, as he blazed over at the Church End before Clee began to really stamp their authority on the game.
An increased spell of pressure led to the hosts finding the opener, in what was a fine move. Dan Gallimore, Essel and Tomlinson were all involved, with McMenemy firing the ball into the corner of the net on 64 minutes.
Gallimore and Flett – both off the bench – had a really positive impact on the contest. With the Owls pressing for a second, the lively Essel appeared to be clearly dragged to the ground by a defender in the area, but the referee waved away the appeals.
They did, however, earn a penalty with three minutes left on the clock when Tomlinson charged into the box and was upended. Flett blasted the spot kick home to send the vast majority of the bumper crowd away in high spirits.
Clee will be looking to build on the positive result when they face local rivals Grimsby Borough on Easter Monday.
