Pleasure Island site development to progress with planners
There is a blueprint to transform Cleethorpes’ former Pleasure Island site into a holiday destination.
According to reports, the owners of the 54-acre site on Kings Road are to submit a formal planning application for the development, estimated to create up to 200 jobs.
Alongside the 212 luxury holiday lodges, there are plans for a Lidl store, a Home Bargains store, and a Costa Coffee cafe.
YPG Fab 2 and Seaside Getaways Ltd will build 212 lodges with around 50 in ‘prime locations’.
There had been delays with the plans first announced in the summer of 2020.
The Covid pandemic has also affected the business plans of firms due to occupy the site.
The lakes which will be used for water sports are a reported five acres in size.
The developer is negotiating with representatives from Lidl, Home Bargains and Costa, and hotel operators.
Also in the plan of the development is a large hotel and conference centre with a 5,000 capacity.
The lodges will be manufactured locally and will cost between £120,000, and up to estuary–viewing plots with grand lodges worth £220,000.
The lodges will be powered by sustainable heating sources and use 60 percent less power than a traditional lodge.
They are steel framed, fully insulated, and with a roof terrace. Buyers will own the plot where they are pitched.
The Pleasure Island theme park opened in May 1990 but sadly closed in October 2016.
It has remained vacant since and has gradually fallen into disrepair.
It is thought that the new development would also include a petrol filling station with electric vehicle charging facilities and a drive-thru coffee shop.
The development is being promoted by a consortium of developers including Lidl and YPG, a Liverpool-based leisure developer.
It has appointed national planning and development consultancy Lichfields to progress the plans.
In 2020, Lichfields’ Associate Director James Cox said:
“The proposals provide a positive response to the Council’s aspirations to deliver all-weather facilities in this resort area of Cleethorpes.
“In addition to enhancing the range of existing retail and leisure provisions accessible to residents, it would also attract new visitor expenditure to Cleethorpes and generate new job opportunities.”
