Grimsby library to reopen in New Year after asbestos scare

Grimsby Central Library is set to open its doors again in the New Year after an asbestos management inspection forced a shock closure.

The library will reopen in January after repair and replacement work was done to the main lending library and entrance foyer.

In a joint statement, North East Lincolnshire Council and Lincs Inspire have said: “Repair works are progressing well and we expect to reopen the library by mid-January.

“Grimsby Central Library temporarily closed in November as a precaution following a routine asbestos management inspection.

“Thank you to all library users for their patience during the temporary closure.

“An update will be issued in the New Year when we will confirm the opening date.

“Our regeneration partner EQUANS and contractors carried out air sampling and no risks have been identified that would cause concern to our staff, customers or partners who use the building.”

The library has been closed since early November, when the council and Lincs Inspire released a joint statement saying that it was “closed until further notice.”

“The temporary closure is a precaution following a routine asbestos management inspection where further works have been identified within the main entrance foyer,” their joint statement continued.

The libraries in Cleethorpes, Waltham and Immingham remain open with no disruption.

The eLibrary service also remains up and running smoothly, and has been unaffected by the library’s closure.

When open again, usual opening times will apply: open Tuesday to Friday 8:30am – 5pm, Saturday 10am-1pm, closed on Sunday and Monday.
