Vandals continue to target Cleethorpes shelters
Vandals have damaged a four well-known shelters in Cleethorpes at the weekend.
The shelters recently underwent a £25,000 refurbishment after a combination of vandalism and decay caused significant damage.
This is now at least the second time an incident of this nature has occured at the Cleethorpes shelters over the last few months.
Council staff discovered the vandalism, which includes both grafitti and structural damage, at the four Kingsway shelters on Sunday.
Graffiti tags have been scrawled over one shelter and the windows and surrounds smashed or removed at the other three.
Locals have responded with frustration and anger over the frequency of such incidents.
One person commented: “Put up CCTV, and when the vandals are caught and identified, make them pay for the repairs and work on the shelter to make them good again.”
“The shelters all look as if they need some TLC, not good for the visitors to the resort to see. The Council need to spend money where it’s needed to promote the resort in a positive way,” wrote another.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for Environment and Transport at North East Lincolnshire Council, added:
“We spent about £25,000 refurbishing all four shelters earlier in the autumn, so it’s all the more disappointing for this to happen now.
“They’ve had extensive roof repairs carried out at all four shelters, the timber and glazing has been replaced and they were repainted.
“The shelters are here for everyone to enjoy, it’s not acceptable that they are treated in this way.
“If you have any information about who damaged the shelters, please get in touch with the police.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact the police by calling the non-emergency number 101 and quoting the crime reference number 16/124197/21.
