Vulcan to the Sky announces South Yorkshire design challenge
Students in South Yorkshire are being encouraged to participate in Vulcan to the Sky’s unique, new design challenge.
The prize will be in the form of a fresh experience celebrating an ‘inspirational aircraft icon’.
The Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST) has partnered with The Work-wise Foundation for the competition which will see students designing an exhibition stand for an original Vulcan Bomb Bay fuel tank, once installed in the trust’s iconic Avro Vulcan XH558 aircraft.
Participants will reportedly receive weekly calls from Steve Wainwright, director at DN4 Innovation Management Ltd. As well as experts from The Work-wise Foundation.
The designs must be submitted by the end of November and will be judged in December.
The winning design will reportedly be manufactured by Steve, multi-disciplinary sub-contractor CBE+ and the winning student team.
It will be unveiled at the Get up to Speed with STEM even on 23 March 2022 before being put on display at the new Vulcan Experience Hangar at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which plans to open next year.
The Vulcan to the Sky Trust aims to educate and inspire the next generation of engineers, a process that began with schools being invited to explore the site.
The Vulcan Experience will also house the Green Technology Hub which will teach youths about the current climate challenge.
John Sharman, chair of VTST, said: “The exhibition stand for the fuel tank will have a prime location within The Vulcan Experience so it needs to be attractive and engaging for children and adults, and of course, structurally sound.”
Vulcan to the Sky is also fundraising to create a new hangar for The Vulcan Experience.
Their target of £2.2 million will help them secure a mortgage and provide a new home for the Avro Vulcan XH558.
They have until Friday 31 December to raise the money.
