Doncaster bids for city status in royal competition

Doncaster is bidding for city status for the fourth time next year under the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations.

A royal competition was launched to grant city status to the most deserving towns across the UK.

The Queen will make the decision for one or more towns in 2022 for her 70-year anniversary on the throne.

The council are appealing to the public to support the bid.

This comes after recent news that the council are bidding for Doncaster to become the national home for the new Great British Railways (GBR), which will create jobs outside of London.

Team Doncaster is putting the bid together to display Doncaster’s achievements and aspirations.

They have until Wednesday 8 December to submit their case and highlight why Doncaster should be awarded city status.

Many people already mistake Doncaster for a city as it is so large – with a population of approximately 310,000 – and has achieved so much.

Doncaster has an international airport, a wildlife park, a racecourse, historic buildings and iconic landmarks for the community to share.

Mayor Ros Jones, chair of the Team Doncaster partnership, told Doncaster Council: “I am immensely proud of Doncaster and I want it to become one of the UK’s newest cities.

“We have a 10 year plan Team Doncaster is working to drive this borough forward, brightening all our futures.

“I know Doncaster is already on the map for so many brilliant things and certainly this royal stamp of approval will boost our fortunes even further.

“We want to welcome people to a vibrant city in 2022 and city status will help us on our journey to more great things for this borough.

So please back our bid!

Doncaster Council has also released a hashtag to share on social media in support of the bid: #GoingForItDN.
