Hurst thinking about striker transfer after Wealdstone defeat
Grimsby Town manager Paul Hurst has revealed that might be looking to the transfer market after Tuesday’s shock 1-0 defeat to Wealdstone.
It was the Mariners’ second defeat of the season and the second time they failed to score in a game this season.
The Mariners have only two senior recognised strikers, in Ryan Taylor and Lenell John-Lewis, with the former currently injured.
John-Lewis has started Town’s last three games but has divided opinion amongst fans, with no goals from open play so far this season.
Speaking after the loss, Hurst said, “it’s potentially an area where we could be a bit lighter.”
“On the other hand we’ve got Will (Bapaga), Erico (Sousa) and Max Wright, they might not be out-and-out strikers but if you bring another one into the fray then someone misses out.
“You can only have so many but it’s certainly something that I’ll be considering.”
However, Hurst has said that fans should not be expecting a new signing imminently, if he does decide to add one, saying:
“You don’t want to have a knee-jerk because of one result you didn’t want.”
John McAtee is Grimsby’s top scorer this season, but limped off injured at the start of the second half in the defeat to Wealdstone.
“It’s similar to what he had (after the Yeovil game) which is a concern.
“We’ll assess him for the weekend” Hurst said.
While McAtee is in a race against time to get ready for the visit of Notts County on Saturday, Harry Clifton could make a return.
“If it was the last game of the season he’d have played but we were just cautious of losing him for longer so decided to not take the risk.
“When Harry plays it gives us an extra worker an an extra midfield player in a wider position” Hurst said.
