Husband attacks wife with meat cleaver in South Yorkshire

South Yorkshire Police have jailed a man after he attacked his wife with a meat cleaver in a horrific domestic attack.

The man subsequently received 15 years in prison for his crime.

Graham Pearson, 64, reportedly headbutted his wife before striking her on the head twice with the large blade.

At the time of the incident, he said: “I’ll kill ya, I’ve got a life sentence in me.”

In an attempt to get the attack to stop, the victim began apologising profusely.

Pearson then said: “I will kill you one of these days.”

He told SYP that he did it to “shut her up”.

Investigating officer PC Rachel Waddington said: “This was an utterly horrific attack and left the victim believing she was going to die.

“This horrendous ordeal came about because the defendant was in a bad mood after someone had made a joke at his expense during a family visit earlier in the day.

“After returning home, Pearson’s wife tried to engage with him and rather than talking about what happened he went straight to the kitchen drawer for the meat cleaver.”

After the meat cleaver attack, the victim hurried outside to call 999.

Pearson was instantly detained from his home on Wybourn House Road, Sheffield and interviewed at a police station.

He was convicted by a jury of wounding with intent and threats to kill on Monday 13 September.

He was later sentenced to 15 years in prison at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday 15 October.

He will reportedly serve a minimum of 10 years behind bars.

Detective Inspector Stephanie Phoenix from the Domestic Abuse Unit said: “I am satisfied that this violent domestic abuser is now behind bars and would like to commend the victim for her courage and dignity following the dreadful and escalating abuse she suffered over many traumatising years.

“This case is also a sobering reminder of the abuse that some people may be suffering at the hands of their partners behind closed doors.

“To anyone in South Yorkshire who is living in fear of a partner or spouse, we can help you.”

Non-emergency domestic abuse cases can be reported by calling 101 or you can visit their dedicated online reporting tool on the SYP website.
