Hedgehogs deliberately killed in Doncaster park

Several hedgehogs were found over the past week at Sandall Park in Doncaster which were deliberately killed by attackers.

Eight hedgehogs were reportedly found by volunteers who believe that their deaths were not caused by natural means.

They do not think the hedgehogs were killed by foxes, badgers or dogs either.

Some were said to have extensive injuries, which has been reported to the local police.

A spokesperson for Sandall Park said: “We have some sad/bad news to report.

“There have been at least eight dead hedgehogs in the park over the last week or so.

“We don’t believe their deaths have been natural, nor do we believe they have been killed by a fox, badger or dog.

“We will not be posting details of their apparent injuries or other details as it would be too upsetting for people.

“We just want to make you aware so that if you see a hedgehog in distress, you can perhaps report it?

“It is nice to know that there are (or were) so many hedgehogs in the park.

“Let’s hope they go into hibernation soon so that some may survive until next year.”

Hedgehogs are currently on the Red List for British Mammals, a report conducted by the Mammal Society which aims to protect and save Britain’s wildlife.

This means that hedgehogs are now classed as being ‘vulnerable’ and at risk of extinction.

Attacks like the ones at Sandall Park are only aiding in the extinction of these innocent, little creatures.

The Mammal Society are aiming to build a new Nature Recovery Network, a place for endangered wildlife (such as hedgehogs) to thrive.

Others animals currently at risk of extinction include: wildcats, beavers, red squirrels, water voles, hazel dormice and a variety of bats.
