Rugby club teams up with charity to tackle mental illness
Scunthorpe Samaritans and Scunthorpe Rugby Club have announced they are to continue to work together to tackle mental health issues for the next two years until 2022.
Since 2018, Scunthorpe Samaritans has been raising awareness of mental health issues at the club.
This supports the club’s drive to become the leading club in the country for tackling mental health issues, through its Tackling It Together initiative.
The news is also good for the junior team (aged 14-16) who will continue to wear shirts branded with the Samaritans logo.
Scunthorpe Rugby Club hopes to become the country’s leading sports’ club for mental well-being.
The work with Samaritans is part of its ‘Tackling Together’ initiative.
Tony Wilkinson, Chair of Age Grade Rugby at SRUFC, said:
“We set up Tackling Together Initiative last year to improve the mental well-being of everybody connected with Heslam Park”.
“The 14-16-year-olds will be wearing the Samaritans logo”.
“This is an important group to target because they are at an age when they can have issues with mental health and self-image”.
Dave Wildman, Director of Scunthorpe Samaritans, added:
“The club has been extremely helpful in allowing us to fundraise on match days.
“By advertising on the junior team’s shirts, we can reach out to not just the players, but also the parents, coaching staff, and fans who go”.
“Because young men are at high risk, they are very much our target audience”.
“We are really pleased to be able to renew this partnership with the rugby club”.
