Plans unveiled for 300 new homes in Grimsby

North East Lincolnshire Council have unveiled plans for 300 new flats in Grimsby town centre.

The announcement came after the removal of the footbridge between Grimsby’s Riverhead and Garth Lane yesterday morning.

This latest addition will form part of a larger scheme to develop the long-neglected Garth Lane site.

The £30m plans were first approved in 2009, and were originally said to include new retail outlets and 290 car parking spaces.

Now, final plans have been revised to facilitate between 280 and 300 waterside flats.

Government minister Jake Berry has committed £3.75 million to enable the council to buy part of the Garth Lane site, paving the way for the new residential properties.

Councillor John Fenty called the project “a great step forward in two key areas of regeneration taking place at Riverhead and Garth Lane.”

“With everything that we are doing, we hope that Sainsbury’s will think it is a good place to remain.

“We are driving up the footfall in the area with all these developments and it will make Grimsby a phenomenal place to work, live and play,” he continued.

Councillor Philip Jackson added:

“The Garth Lane site is hugely important to bringing areas of Grimsby together.

“The site has been derelict for some time, and along with Frederick Ward Way has only served to cut off the north of Grimsby from the rest of the town centre.

“We’re also doing significant work to the West Haven Maltings development site to bring in the national youth zone provider, OnSide.

“The area will be revitalised in terms not seen for generations.”

The new bridge, scheduled to be completed in March, will connect the Riverhead to the new waterside development.

Additional funding is currently being sought from the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (HLEP) and The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to support the delivery of the project.
