Staff mourn ‘world famous’ Grimsby Town Hall cat
A cat that had become a much-loved mascot of Grimsby Town Hall was killed in an accident at the weekend.
The sad news that black and white moggie Mariner will no longer be an ambassador for the town was announced by North East Lincolnshire Council chief executive Rob Walsh on Twitter.
He said: “Mariner, our adorable #townhallcat was lost to an accident over the weekend.
“He really did become a mascot for us, he put smiles on faces, he brightened up the days, he kept us all going.
“He will be so dearly missed.”
Mariner passed away after being in collision with a car in Town Hall Square.
It was only last month that Gi Media reported a portrait of Mariner had been hung in the Town Hall – taking pride of place close to paintings of former mayors and trawler masterpieces.
The chief executive said at the time: “Mariner’s portrait takes pride of place in his adopted home, Grimsby Town Hall. He is now the most famous Town Hall cat in the whole wide world.”

The cat had been a popular resident of the Town Hall for some years, after staff realised he was homeless and took him in. They then fed him, gave him lots of attention, and even provided him with a bed.
In return, Mariner walked around in luxury like he owned the place!
Tributes to Mariner flooded in on Twitter, with one person saying: “Oh no that is such sad news. Mariner, you brought so much joy to many people and put smiles on the faces of many, thank you for being our mascot.”
Another added: “Oh I’m so sorry to hear that. I always loved your pics of him on Insta. Mariner always seemed so intrepid. Let’s hope heaven has a town hall for him to roam.”
