New portrait looks purr-fect in Grimsby Town Hall

A new portrait hangs among those of some of Grimsby’s most illustrious citizens in the grandeur of the town hall – Mariner the cat.

An artwork of the much-loved black and white moggie now takes pride of place in his adopted home at the centre of local government, also a gallery for paintings of former mayors and trawler masterpieces.

The unveiling was done by NELC chief executive Rob Walsh on Twitter.

He said: “Mariner’s portrait takes pride of place in his adopted home, Grimsby Town Hall. He is now the most famous Town Hall cat in the whole wide world.”

Mariner has been a popular resident of the Town Hall for some years now, after staff realised he was homeless and took him in. They now feed him, give him lots of attention, and even provide him with a bed.

In return, Mariner walks around in luxury like he owns the place!

A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said: “Mariner has become an icon of North East Lincolnshire since the day he moved in, and has now taken his place alongside so many iconic figures in Grimsby history.

“In these tough times, his feline feelgood factor has really helped lift everyone’s spirits.

“He loves the attention – and we all love giving it to him – and is a keen ambassador for the Town Hall.”
