On 3 September, Pietro Badgolio, prime minister since the ousting of Mussolini in July, had given an unconditional surrender to Allied commander General Eisenhower, while telling the Germans that Italy would fight on till the end. Today, the truth is revealed, infuriating German leader Adolf Hitler.
